Give children a vitamin D boost with DLux400
Vitamin D deficiency has been discovered in a significant number of children who have died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, two senior paediatric pathologists say.
Dr Irene Scheimberg and Dr Marta Chen reported on BBC Radio 4 this week that deaths and injuries which are thought to be suspicious could be put down to vitamin D deficiency and linked bone diseases.
The doctors believe their findings warrant further investigation, after the diagnosis by Dr Scheimberg of continental rickets in a four-month-old baby, whose parents were suspected of shaking him to death.
In London, a further 30 cases of vitamin D deficiency have been discovered by the paediatrician, with 45 children - mostly infants under 12 months - in Yorkshire being diagnosed with moderate to severe levels of vitamin D deficiency. *
Vitamin D is a vitamin and pro-hormone which the body naturally produces by synthesising ultraviolet light from the sun. As it is required in the body to make proper use of calcium for stronger bones and teeth, deficiency is often the cause of bone diseases in children, including osteoporosis and rickets.
Recently the Chief Medical Officer for England, Dame Sally Davies announced her concerns to health professionals regarding a rise in vitamin D related conditions, asking them to consider vitamin D supplementation for at risk groups, including pregnant mothers.
Babies are born with around half of the mother's vitamin D levels, and as only 10 per cent of the body’s requirements is satisfied by diet, it is more important than ever that children's vitamin D levels are at an optimum.
BetterYou, which has pioneered product development to produce more convenient and effective methods of supplementing vitamin D, has always recommended that children aged between six months to five years should take vitamin D supplements to prevent bone diseases.
DLux400, designed specifically for children from birth, provides 400iu of vitamin D in a single spray - the recommended daily amount for children under five years old.
Andrew Thomas, Founder of BetterYou says: "BetterYou has led the field in vitamin D innovation for more than two years, producing the market's first vitamin D daily oral spray, in a range of strengths, catering for every vulnerable group.
“Particularly suitable for infants and older children is our DLux400, which is an excellent method of supplementation as there are no difficult tablets to swallow or need for water.
“In addition, as vitamin D relies on our bloodstream for transportation, an oral spray ensures faster uptake via the mucous membrane, entering the bloodstream three or four times faster with little wastage compared to our inefficient digestive system.”
DLux400 retails at £6.25 from www.betteryou.uk.com, or from Boots and independent health stores nationwide. For more information, click here or call 0114 220 2229.Sources:
